MAINTENANCE work on an Australian Navy transport ship is expected to maintain 120 Hunter jobs for the next four weeks.

HMAS Manoora sailed into Newcastle Harbour yesterday morning for planned maintenance at Forgacs floating dock.

The 8450-tonne ship spent three years in Newcastle in the late 1990s being converted from a landing ship to a helicopter support ship and transporter.

Forgacs joint managing director Peter Burgess said workers would undertake a routine check of the ship's two propellers, propeller shafts and rudder.

`It's a major task and the parts will be checked and repaired as required,' he said.

The ship's crew will stay in Newcastle for the duration of the work.
